Activist Raises Concerns With Use Of Children In Political Adverts

Child’s Right International, an NGO, has urged politicians in the country to refrain from using children to run political advertisements.

It said children have no right to participate in any form of political campaign because they are not eligible voters.

In a statement signed by the Executive Director of Child’s Rights International, Bright Appiah, the organisation said the practice is not in the best interest of children and is an infringement on their rights.

Citing Article 26 of the 1992 Constitution and section 2 of the 1998 Children’s Act 560, the statement noted that the child’s rights and interest should be of paramount importance to policy makers.

It further maintained that the fact that government has the statutory obligation to formulate policies for children does not mean they can be used to drive the wheels of those policies on campaign platforms.

The NGO said a political conference is the best platform for politicians to outline their vision for children if they want to score points.
