Steffen Freund appointed assistant head coach at Tottenham

Former Germany international Steffen Freund has been appointed as assistant head coach at Tottenham.

The 42-year-old returns to White Hart Lane nearly 10 years after leaving the club during his playing days, having spent five seasons in north London between 1998 and 2003, making 120 appearances in that time.

Since retiring from playing in 2004, the former Borussia Dortmund man has gone on to coach Germany at several youth levels as well as operating as assistant to Berti Vogts during his time as Nigeria boss.

He now assumes a role as new manager Andre Villas-Boas’ right-hand man, completing the Portuguese head coach’s backroom team.

Freund joins first-team coach Luis Martins, fitness coach Jose Mario Rocha, head of opposition scouting Daniel Sousa and goalkeeping coach Tony Parks in the new-look Spurs staff.
