Gerrard: If Martinez is Liverpool manager, he has my full support

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has said Roberto Martinez will have his full support if the Wigan boss takes over at Anfield.

The coach is currently in America holding talks with the Reds’ owners about taking over, and quotes attributed to Latics chairman Dave Whelan today indicated the Spaniard would want control of all footballing matters on Merseyside.

Gerrard, 31, is currently on international duty and admitted he was not fully aware of how talks in the US were going despite knowledge that they are taking place.

“We’ll have to wait and see,” he told reporters on Friday afternoon.

“That’s news to me – my focus has been on the game tomorrow but I am aware that Roberto Martinez has been speaking to the club, and everything I’ve heard about the guy has been good and positive.

“So we’ll have to wait and see what the club decides to do. If he is the manager he’s certainly got my full support.”

Dalglish was sacked from his post at Anfield after finishing eighth in the Premier League with the Reds’ worst ponts total for almost 60 years.
