Durban matric pupils who were prevented by the taxi strike from writing their supplementary exams for the old curriculum (NATED Report 550) last week, will only get another chance of rewriting these exams next year, says the provincial Education Department.

Thousands of commuters were left stranded in Durban and surrounding areas on Friday when the taxi drivers’ strike entered its second day.

The municipal bus fleet operations were suspended on the day after fears of more vandalism from strikers.

Among thousands of stranded commuters was Sweetness Mkhungo, 24, from KwaMashu, who was on her way to write her biology exam at uMlazi’s isiKhwelo Primary School.

She waited hours for a bus which never arrived.

She arrived at her exam venue at about 4pm, leaving her with only an hour to spare.

Asked how she managed to write in a three-hour paper in an hour, she said: “I tried my best.”

“Unfortunately for those (old curriculum students who missed the exam) we cannot have a supplementary paper.

“They need to register for next year,” Education Department spokesman Sihle Mlotshwa said on Monday.

A teacher from the school, who cannot be named, said there were a number of absentees on Friday.

No extra time had been awarded to those who arrived late because of the strike. – Cadet News Agency
