Joycelyn Assimeng and some doctors from Korle-Bu attending to kids from the Osu Children’s Home
A young pediatrician from the Korle-Bu Child Health Department, Joycelyn Assimeng, on Saturday organized a group of about eight medical personnel from the premier teaching hospital to render free healthcare to orphans at the Osu Children’s Home.
The comprehensive health service offered the orphans included general medical screening, dental care, eye care and other physiological care.
She personally mobilized resources for the charity drive, with popular pharmaceutical company, Tobinco Pharmacy, supplying most of the drugs needed for the various treatments at the orphanage.
Apparently, Miss Assimeng has been mobilizing young doctors to render free medical to orphans for two years now. The pediatrician told DAILY GUIDE that she saw her effort as a social responsibility. “I know that there are children who have a lot of needs and this is one area [orphanages] that you can find a lot of children who have different needs”.
According to her, her plan was to stimulate people to learn to give to the less privileged in society. “It is not always giving to those who already have, but I think the message is giving to those who don’t have,” she said.
Last year, Miss Assimeng organized a similar medical tour to the Teshie Nungua Orphanage. The team of medical personnel who thronged the Osu Children’s Home included dentists, ophthalmologists, general physicians, pediatricians and nurses.
Currently, there are approximately 200 children in the home aged between one and 23 years. According to the orphanage, the numbers fluctuated since children were usually reunited with families while others were adopted.
The orphanage is often dogged with resource constraints; hence the need for charity drives to supplement its resources.
