Egypt, Zambia disagree over friendly

Seven-time African champions Egypt and current champions Zambia are yet to agree on a venue for a friendly game planned for May 25.

The Egyptians would wish the game is played in Morocco, where they have set up training camp, but the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) said they would rather face The Pharaohs in South Africa instead.

Egypt host Mozambique in their opening Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup Group G qualifier at home in Alexandria on June 1 while Zambia face Sudan away in a Group D game on June 2.

“The Egyptians want us to play them in Morocco where they are camping,” FAZ communications officer Erick Mwanza said.

“But if we go there we will lose three to four days of training and we do not have that luxury. It is either they follow us or it is off.

“We can’t go to North Africa and come back to Johannesburg, then back to Sudan. There will be little time to train.”

Zambia have been inactive since they lifted their debut Africa Cup title on February 12 in Libreville in Gabon.

The African champions game against Sudan away in Khartoum will mark their first official since then.

Meanwhile, Mwanza said should the friendly fall through, Zambia will stick to their earlier planned programme of friendly matches against South African Premiership clubs when the full team enter camp in Johannesburg on May 20 en route to Sudan.
