Bystanders describe bloody shooting

Cape Town – Police were seen frisking four men outside the Western Cape High Court just moments after a man was shot and seriously wounded on Tuesday.

A bystander, Junior Ngumbi, said he was walking with a client towards the court on Keerom Street in Cape Town around noon when he heard a gunshot and a woman screaming.

He saw a man flee the scene in a white Toyota Conquest and another man lying on the corner of Leeuwen and Keerom with blood pouring from his neck.

Later at about 13:00, police were seen searching four men outside Castello’s coffee shop, opposite the court building.

The men were led to a police van where they were put in the back and driven off.

“There was lots and lots of blood but I could see he was still conscious,” he said.

Ngumbi showed a photo of the man lying in a pool of blood with a woman leaning over him, propping him up on a jacket.

He said two men and a woman had been walking to the court when a gunman apparently approached the one man and shot him in the mouth.

Curious crowds gathered around the crime scene staring at a bloodied tissue lying on the pavement where the man had been moments before.

All that remained of the shooting was a mark from where the bullet ricocheted off a nearby car.

The shooting was apparently connected to the appearance of suspected gangsters in the court.
Police were not yet commenting.
