Liverpool MP Steve Rotheram hits out at Alan Davies’ Hillsborough comments in personal letter

Goal :    Liverpool MP Steve Rotheram has hit out at comedian Alan Davies for his comments regarding the Hillsborough disaster.

Davies had criticised the decision to reschedule Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final in order to avoid the anniversary of the disaster, as it meant that Chelsea would be forced to play against Tottenham just three days before their Champions League meeting with Barcelona.

His remarks were met with outrage by those families involved in the ‘Truth and Justice for the 96’ campaign, with many people taking to Twitter to send abusive and threatening messages to the comedian and his family.

Although he condemned the actions of the people responsible for the online threats, Liverpool Walton MP Rotheram criticised what he described as “misguided and erroneous views” in a letter to Davies, adding that he had “caused great offence to many people”.

In the letter published in The Times, Rotheram said: “I read your comments regarding Liverpool’s refusal to play on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster with some disappointment and incredulity.

“I know much of what you said in your podcast was for comic effect, but it has caused great offence to many people still campaigning for the Truth and Justice for the 96.
