Durban – Four people were killed and two others seriously injured after a head-on collision on the N3 in Durban, paramedics said on Saturday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said a family of five were travelling along the N3 towards Pinetown at about 21:30 on Friday when their car collided with another vehicle.

Some of the injured were trapped in the twisted metal of the vehicles, while a 2-year-old girl and her mother were ejected through the front window, Botha said.

“Medics triaged the injured and found that the 2-year-old and three other family members died on impact. The mom was at the side of the road, several metres from the car and in a critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle was still trapped in the wreckage of his car – critically injured.”

Botha said the Jaws of Life was used to free the people trapped inside the wreckage.

The two people were placed on ventilators and transported to various hospitals, he said.

In another accident in KwaZulu-Natal, five people were injured when their vehicle overturned on Saturday morning in Kwadengezi.

Botha said the driver of the bakkie, carrying churchgoers, lost control and overturned throwing off five people from the back.

Paramedics stabilised the people on the scene before they were transported to a nearby hospital, said Botha.
