Residents of Akologo Darbo in the Kassena Nankana district of the Upper East Region have boycotted the ongoing voter biometric registration exercise.
According to Citi News’ Upper East regional correspondent Agana Bawa, the residents of the community have also threatened not to take part in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary polls in December.
He stated that the residents are unhappy with the change of name of one of the polling stations from Akologo because they believe their right of ownership of the community has been taken from them.
The people of Akologo staged a similar protest during the district level elections in 2010.
Meanwhile, the EC has suspended registration in 12 electoral areas in the Akuse-Amedeka portion of the Lower Manya Krobo District. This was due to a change in the code numbers of the 12 polling stations in the area from the Eastern region to the Greater Accra Region.
The change in the code numbers did not go down well with the Lower Manya Krobo District, which is locked up in a dispute over the area with nearby Dangme West District, now the Shai Osudoku District in the Greater Accra.
The District Security Council explained that the polling stations had to be suspended following a report that around midnight on March 21, 2012, some unknown persons locked up the gate leading to the district offices of the EC at Odumase Krobo and placed substances suspected to be “juju” at the entrance.
The District Chief Executive of Lower Manya Krobo, Isaac Agbo-Tetteh, stated that he had to mobilise the police and the assembly officials to unlock the gate for the EC officials to go on with their normal work.
