‘Mphela has options’ – Agent

Katlego Mphela

Belgian side Genk are just one of a number of clubs who have expressed an interest in taking Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mphela back to Europe.

That is according to the player’s manager, Glyn Binkin, who says that the player is being tracked by a number of teams, who are likely to make a move at the end of this season.

But Genk might be leading the way, having decided to come back in for a player who they have long looked at as a possible target.

“There have been no developments in the Genk interest over the past few weeks, but we would not expect there to be any because the transfer window in Belgium is closed, as well as in other parts of Europe such as Russia,” Binkin said.

“This is not the first time that they have expressed an interest in Katlego, they have made enquiries before. I am sure they have been told all about him by [Bafana Bafana teammate] Anele [Ngcongca].

“But it is not just Genk who are looking at him, some of the teams who have expressed an interest before are continuing to look at him.”

Mphela has been linked with both Glasgow clubs in the past, Celtic and Rangers, while English Championship side Birmingham City had a bid rejected by Sundowns just after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Likewise, Sundowns also rejected a bid for Russian team Terek Grozny at the same time.

“Katlego is just concentrating on helping Sundowns win the League this season, no move can take place until the end of the season, so his focus is fully at Chloorkop,” Binkin adds.

He remains unsure whether a move abroad will happen for the 27-year-old, but says the ball is in Sundowns’ court.

“It is up to them whether they want to sell him, maybe if they win the League this year it will make it easier for them to part with him,” Binkin says.
