Ennahda, Tunisia’s dominant Islamist party, released a statement on February 7, calling for a demonstration in support of the Syrian people on Friday, February 10. The statement denounced Bashar Al Assad’s oppressive crackdown, which has escalated considerably in recent months.
The statement, signed by the moderate Islamist party’s leader and founder Rached Ghannouchi, asserted that, “The Syrian, blood-driven regime continues to publicly massacre its people.”
“As the reach of the Arab Spring extends so does the determination of the great Syrian people to achieve their objectives, and enjoy the blessing that democracy represents.” said Ghannouchi in his statement.
The party confirmed its support of the Tunisian government’s decision to expel the Syrian Ambassador, considering it a duty for the country that ignited the Arab Spring to stand by all revolutionary populations that are against injustice and oppression.
