Second demo against health capitation holds in Kumasi
The Ashanti Development Union (ADU) has carried through a second demonstration against the piloting of the capitation scheme by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
The demonstrators marched to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to petition the President to prevail upon the NHIA to immediately suspend the policy implementation in the Ashanti region.
“Mr. President, is this the promise of a better Ghana you made to the people? In those days when civilisation hit us in the face, they lord it over us, now our own people also lords it over us, forcing us to accept policies we do not want to. They infringe on our fundamental human rights, our own people that we trusted, indeed Mr. President this is a breach of faith and breach of trust. By capitation you have betrayed us”, read a statement issued by the group.
The Union, on Friday February 3, 2012 launched a crusade for the capitation to be put on hold until stakeholders are brought on board for consensus building and increased education undertaken before the policy re-introduction.
According to Coordinator of the ADU, Edmond Oppong-Peprah, “when we demonstrated against the policy for the first time, the response we got was that NDC party executives such as Asiedu Nketia, Anita Disoso, Ama Benyiwa-Doe and others were sent to insult us. Moving from one radio station to the other, they insulted the people under the guise of providing education on capitation. Since when did NDC party executives become employees of the NHIA? This smacks a high degree of incompetency on the NHIA”.
He maintains the capitation cannot be accepted because it has “brought about deaths and untold hardships, it is a marked sign of broken promises, of a people abused and taken for granted”.
The group says the demonstrations will continue until the policy is withdrawn.
