NPP Parries NDC Lies

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has warned the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to stop peddling falsehood about its presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, or incur its wrath.

Last week, agents of government and their assigns, including the ‘rented press’, put a spin on a long-existing video dating back to 2008, claiming that Nana Akufo-Addo was fondling the breast of a female make-up artiste of the state broadcaster, Ghana Television (GTV).

The lady at the centre of the controversy and some of her colleagues who were present at the time of the incident have not only expressed utter dismay and disappointment about the NDC’s claims, but have also denied that such a thing happened.

In spite of the outright denial of the NDC’s claim, members of the ruling party, including Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr Louisa Hannah Bissiw, the Cuban-trained veterinary doctor, continue to accuse the NPP presidential candidate of wrongdoing.

This is what seems to have compelled the NPP to issue a strongly-worded statement in condemnation of the NDC’s propaganda machinery.

The statement issued by the party and signed by Perry Okudzeto, a Deputy Communications Director, described the development as “desperate, irresponsible and criminal efforts by the communications directorate of the presidency at the Castle, controlled by Koku Anyidoho and Stan Dogbe, to shift public attention from the biggest corruption scandal ever in Ghana’s history.”

This, he noted, was because “from the doctored video, it is obvious that the video has been worked on to suit the propaganda value of Prof. Mills and his young and inexperienced communications team”, emphasising that “the scenes in the clip put out by the rented NDC press do not reflect what is captured in the documentary.”

“Furthermore, the vile description of what transpired in the movie, as put out by the NDC communicators, is a total opposite of what the NDC media and hatchet men are seeking to portray to the Ghanaian people as was carried in the original documentary”, the statement noted.

The opposition party insists “no such sexual harassment happened and that this is yet another example of a government that has completely given up on any hope of winning this year’s election based on its performance.”

That notwithstanding, they indicated that “this kind of dirty campaign would not offer any refuge for those who promised a ‘Better Ghana’ and ended up moving the nation backwards.”

The leadership of the NPP has sent a message of caution to incumbent President Mills, who claims to abhor politics of insult but yet looks on unconcerned while members of his government and communications team denigrate his political opponent with utter disdain and impunity, that “no amount of false allegations and dirty campaign against the New Patriotic Party and its 2012 presidential candidate will succeed.”

“Indeed, nothing can divert the attention of the good people of Ghana from the failures of the Mills-Mahama administration,” Perry Okudzeto noted in the statement.

For them, “this smear campaign from the Presidency only confirms the overwhelming perception out there that President John Atta Mills and his government have really lost touch with the concerns of the ordinary people of Ghana.”

The party has thus charged President Mills and members of his administration and party men to channel their energies towards addressing the growing youth unemployment, rising cost of living, high cost of business, low sales, falling standards of education, collapsing healthcare, and unprecedented high levels of corruption that the nation is saddled with.

This, according to them, was because “no such highly incompetent, non-performing government can hope to win an election by prosecuting a campaign of lies, insults and character assassination. They should not take the people of Ghana for granted.”
