A MODERN eye centre project currently under construction at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi will be opened to the public by May.

This pleasant news was announced by the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Prof. Ohene Adjei during the opening of KATH’s 2011 annual performance review workshop.  

He noted that construction work on the plush 50-bed centre, being funded by the hospital and the Himalayan Cataract Project, USA was about 80 percent complete.

He added that a revision of the project design resulted in the cost escalating from GH¢877,000 to about GH¢1.5million.

Te two-day event attended by KATH board members, management, departmental heads and staff was to enable the hospital take stock of its performance in 2011 and strategize for this year. 

The CEO said the government funded the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) centre which is also at an advanced stage of completion, adding that installation of critical equipment was currently in progress.

Prof. Ohene Adjei who was highlighting ongoing projects at KATH said the treatment of concrete roofs to reduce leakage had also been awarded on contract at a revised cost of GH¢163,000.

“The hospital used part of its internal generated funds for the procurement of two brand new 400 KVA stand-by generators at the cost of GH¢296,000 during the last year,” he said.

Prof. Ohene Adjei noted the generators which have been delivered are currently being installed at the facility adding they   would provide emergency power supply for the A, B, C and D blocks at KATH during power outages.

He disclosed that painting of the old GEE blocks which started last year had given the D Block a facelift, adding that efforts were being made to complete painting of the remaining blocks soon.

He said a 66-bed special ward was established at the Accident and Emergency Center in 2011 to cater for the needs of patients who cherish their privacy and VIP service.

He also noted that hospital management built a four-storey 32 flat nurses block in May last year which was allocated to critical and emergency nursing staff.
