Egypt: Presidential Candidates Condemn Attack On Aboul Fotouh

Presidential candidates have condemned the attack against Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotouh which occurred overnight on Cairo’s ring road during the candidate’s return from a campaign conference.

Aboul Fotouh has returned home after spending the night in the hospital’s intensive care unit after the attack left him with a brain concussion, according to the Health Ministry.

Potential presidential candidate, Hamdin Sabahi, visited Aboul Fotoul in the hospital where he was admitted, but was not allowed to see him due to his critical condition, Sabahi’s campaign page on Facebook reported. Sabahi called for the immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

Former Arab League Secretary General, Amr Moussa, who intends to run for presidency, also wished Aboul Fotouh a speedy recovery after what he described as a “cowardly” attack. Moussa insisted that the attack is seriously worrying as it indicates the extent of which the nation’s security has deteriorated.

Potential candidate, Ahmed Shafiq, who served as Mubarak’s Prime Minister at the peak of the revolution, expressed his deepest condolences to Aboul Fotouh, reported Al-Ahram newspaper. Shafiq said, “The terrible incident clearly reflects the lack of security and confirms the need to accelerate the investigation into the awful attack.”

Islamist potential candidate, Mohamed Selim Al-Awa, also condemned the attack, calling the Ministry of Interior to protect the nation and wishing Aboul Fotouh a speedy recovery.

Hesham Al-Bastaweesy also condemned the attack and wished Aboul Fotouh a speedy recovery, indicating his full respect and solidarity with the presidential hopeful. Al-Bastaweesy explained that what has happened is an attack on the Egyptian people and must not be taken lightly.

On the other hand, former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency held the ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces and the transitional government accountable for the attack, describing them as “the problem, not the solution”.
