LAGOS Deputy Governor Mrs Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire yesterday expressed concern that the lingering strike by the organised labour over the fuel subsidy removal was stalling the nation’s economic growth.
Responding to reporters’ questions in Lagos during the wreath-laying ceremony at this year‘s Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration at the Tafawa Balewa Square’s Arcade, she said the strike’s continuation should be discouraged.
Her words: “I want Nigerians to pray over the conflict that trailed the January 1 removal of fuel subsidy, and I also call on the Federal Government and the organised labour to ensure a successful negotiation.
“This is because the people who are supposed to be making their daily income are sitting at home, while the country is losing revenue and public properties are being destroyed.’’
Speaking on the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, she said it was necessary to recognise Nigeria’s fallen heroes and respect them for their sacrifices.
Mrs. Orelope-Adefulire said such recognition would motivate serving soldiers to put in their best.
She commended the armed forces for protecting the country’s territorial integrity. The deputy governor had earlier inspected the guard of honour, set free pigeons and laid the wreaths as was the practice during every Armed Forces Remembrance Day celebration.
