Owerri — Minister of Power Professor Bart Nnaji has said that Nigeria is gradually overcoming the epileptic power supply.

He said this yesterday in Owerri, Imo State Capital, where he commissioned a new 60MVA and 132/33kv power transformer.

“Although as a nation we have not yet arrived as far as power is concerned, we are gradually moving away from the epileptic power supply to stable power”, he said.

Nnaji said that the new 60MVA and the power transformer, meant to replace the burnt 45MVA , would improve power supply in the state.

The minister, who further reiterated the commitment of the incumbent administration to its transformation agenda, described Owerri as a hub of power.

In his address, the Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr. Akinwumi Bada, said that the damage of the old transformer had resulted in the inadequate supply of power to the state.

Bada, who was represented by his Executive Director of Transmission Provider, Mr. Olushola Akinire, said that the new power transformer would increase the total installation capacity of the sub-station from 145MVA to 160MVA.

In his remarks, Governor Rochas Okorocha commended the Federal Government for its intervention in tackling the power problem in the state.

“Power has become one major problem that has continued to drag the economy of the country backward. This is the right time for the Federal Government to arrest the situation before it gets out of hands”, the governor said.
