An elderly Vryheid woman died on Tuesday after eating suspected poisonous mushrooms, KwaZulu-Natal police said.
Sondelani Lukhele, 64, and a few other people living in the area bought the mushrooms from a young boy while attending a meeting at the Heeltevrede Farm in Louwsburg, said Lt-Col Vincent Mdunge.
Lukhele was found dead in her house on Tuesday morning, he said.
Preliminary investigations had led police to believe that the mushrooms were poisonous.
Mdunge said several other people reportedly had to be hospitalised after eating the mushrooms.
A inquest docket had been opened and a post mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of Lukhele’s death, he said.
