Simon Mignolet is adamant he wishes to remain at Sunderland next season and claims he has settled in quickly at the Stadium of Light.

Although the Belgian goalkeeper was not expected to be a first-team regular upon his arrival, he made 23 appearances last season as Craig Gordon struggled with form and a knee injury.

And the 22-year-old admitted he felt at home as soon as he arrived at Steve Bruce’s side.

“Settling in was easy. I spoke a little of the language, which really helped,” he told the clubs official website.

“I am not that far away from Belgium here – only an hour flight – and my family are quickly here too.”

Despite being the only Belgian on the club’s books he revealed the morale in the dressing room was a good one and the friendly nature of the Sunderland supporters had really helped him settle down, allowing him to concentrate on his football.

“I have been made to feel welcome by everyone at the club, from the players to the supporters,” he added.

“We have a number of foreign players who speak other languages I can speak.

“Everyone has been very good to me.”
