Ondangwa mayor Leonard Negonga says cities and towns around the world are striving to become economically sustainable through the enhancement and promotion of economic growth and infrastructure.

Negonga said this in a speech read on his behalf by the town’s chairperson of the management committee, Christian Iitope, during the official launch of the Ondangwa Annual Industrial and Trade Exhibition at the town on Friday.

The Ondangwa Town Council initiated the exhibition that is scheduled to run from June 24 to July 2 on the newly identified open space along the Ondangwa-Oshakati main road near the town’s airport.

The mayor believes the exhibition will create the platform for Ondangwa to regain its legacy of being the first trading centre in northern Namibia before the independence of the country.

A total of 40 local exhibitors are said to have already confirmed their participation in the 2011 Ondangwa Annual Industrial and Trade Exhibition.

This exhibition replaced the Ondangwa Trade Fair that was privately owned and hosted for the last time in 2009.

More than N$48 000 was pledged towards the successful hosting of the Ondangwa Annual Industrial and Trade Exhibition 2011 by local companies during the launching event, with Agribank, Pupkewitz and Auas Properties Number Five cc pledging N$10 000 each.
