{"id":50532,"date":"2022-03-02T11:47:38","date_gmt":"2022-03-02T11:47:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/za\/2022\/03\/02\/rebuilding-the-basic-education-system-post-covid-19\/"},"modified":"2022-03-02T11:47:38","modified_gmt":"2022-03-02T11:47:38","slug":"rebuilding-the-basic-education-system-post-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/za\/2022\/03\/02\/rebuilding-the-basic-education-system-post-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Rebuilding the basic education system post-COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div property=\"content:encoded\">\n<p>Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says there is an urgent need to renew the current basic education accord on\u00a0turning schools into centres of excellence.<\/p>\n<p>Motshekga said that the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) has one overriding mission \u2013 to bring into reality the delivery of quality learning and teaching.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister was giving an opening address at the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign Inter-Provincial Workshop at Birchwood Hotel in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must use this workshop as an opportunity to meaningfully contribute to the building of coherent responses on the envisaged measures to reboot and rebuild the basic education system post-COVID-19,\u201d Motshekga said.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister further applauded the QLTC for being hands-on in terms of strengthening quality learning and teaching during the COVID-19 outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) is a collaborative effort between and among the political parties, Department of Basic Education, teacher unions, and Association of School Governing Bodies.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the three-day workshop is \u201cRepositioning the QLTC to mobilise all stakeholders and strengthen partnerships to build a national social compact for education!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister Motshekga said the workshop\u2019s objectives are to reposition, strengthen, advance, redirect, review, and re-evaluate the Quality Learning and Teaching Campaign (QLTC) work.<\/p>\n<p>Among other things, the QLTC structures must do oversight, such as monitor the basic functionality of schools under their tutelage.<\/p>\n<p>The oversight work is anchored in the following pillars among others:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Code of conduct for teachers, learners and support staff,<\/li>\n<li>Procedures and mechanisms of attending to learners\u2019 absenteeism, teachers and support staff.<\/li>\n<li>Teacher Development roll-out plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having recently convened Basic Education Sector Lekgotla, Motshekga said she called for a new post-COVID-19 basic education social compact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am glad that finally, we have this opportunity to lay the foundations for a national social compact for basic education,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Basic Education a societal issue<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Minister Motshekga said that parents are the vital cog in the wheel of basic education, while learners are the heartbeat of the basic education ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cSadly, we lag behind our peers in parents\u2019 participation in children\u2019s schooling, especially in historically disadvantaged communities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Motshekga said there is a need for a new set of non-negotiables for teachers, parents and community leaders which forms the backbone of a new basic education social compact the sector seeks to build. \u2013 <strong>SAnews.gov.za<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, says there is an urgent need to renew the current basic education accord on\u00a0turning schools into centres of excellence.
