Energy markets are destabilised through policy design rather than necessity, public&nbsp; infrastructure is denied sustained investment, and everyday life is reorganised around managed&nbsp; scarcity.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Having produced these conditions through deliberate choices, Western leaders then redirect&nbsp; public anger outward, attributing hardship to Russia and to Putin personally, rather than to the&nbsp; neoliberal frameworks they continue to defend. The construction of an external enemy functions&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>as a political cover story that shields domestic elites and their patron, the , from scrutiny, while&nbsp; citizens are expected to absorb the costs without recourse.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Two Economic Logics, Two Social Outcomes&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>The contrast becomes clearer when the underlying economic systems are examined. In much of&nbsp; the West, neoliberal governance treats the market as the primary organising principle of society,&nbsp; subordinating housing, energy, labour, healthcare, and food security to profit mechanisms. The&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>state retreats from social responsibility while intervening decisively to protect banks,&nbsp; corporations, and financial markets during moments of crisis. Risk is transferred downward,&nbsp; failure is moralised, and security is transformed into a commodity available primarily to those&nbsp; who can afford it.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Russia operates according to a different economic logic. Strategic sectors such as energy,&nbsp; transport, defence, and core infrastructure remain under strong state control, while markets&nbsp; function within clearly defined boundaries. Profit does not override social stability, energy prices&nbsp; are regulated, public transport remains extensive and affordable, and culture, education, and&nbsp; urban development are treated as collective goods rather than speculative assets. The economy is&nbsp; structured to preserve social cohesion and continuity rather than to extract maximum short-term&nbsp; value.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>This distinction is experienced materially. In the West, citizens increasingly encounter the&nbsp; economy as an external force acting upon them, whereas in Russia the economy is expected to&nbsp; function in a manner that allows people to live with a degree of predictability and dignity.&nbsp; Although this orientation does not eliminate inequality or contradiction, it mitigates the social&nbsp; fragmentation produced by unrestrained market rule.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>The Lazy Use of \u201cAuthoritarianism\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Faced with these contrasts, Western commentary routinely retreats into the language of&nbsp; \u201cauthoritarianism,\u201d as though the term itself were sufficient explanation. In practice, it operates&nbsp; as a moral barrier that halts inquiry and blocks comparison, preventing serious examination of&nbsp; how different systems organise social life, regulate markets, distribute risk, and maintain&nbsp; stability.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Russia Beyond the Caricature&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Russia neither replicates Western liberal models nor conforms to the dystopian caricature&nbsp; through which it is commonly represented. It is a society marked by visible state presence,&nbsp; functioning public infrastructure, extensive public transport, sustained investment in culture,&nbsp; relatively low levels of street crime, and a population that largely experiences the state as&nbsp; coherent rather than hollowed out. Those who have spent time there often remark on civic order,&nbsp; social confidence, and everyday stability, conditions that have become increasingly scarce in&nbsp; Western cities shaped by austerity, privatisation, and managed decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>How Political Legitimacy Is Produced&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Political legitimacy is not generated solely through procedural mechanisms. It is produced&nbsp; through outcomes. Housing, energy security, public safety, education, transport, and freedom&nbsp; from constant precarity shape how populations experience power and evaluate governance.&nbsp; Across much of the West, these foundations are deteriorating, while political classes continue to&nbsp; govern through abstraction, symbolism, and moral instruction rather than material provision.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Elite Insulation and Managed Consent&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Putin\u2019s message gains traction because it names elite insulation as a structural condition rather&nbsp; than a temporary failure. Decision-making increasingly occurs at levels removed from popular&nbsp; pressure, as financial markets, defence industries, compliance regimes, and supranational&nbsp; institutions operate with limited accountability. Media ecosystems, concentrated and donor aligned, function less as sites of scrutiny than as instruments of narrative discipline, sustaining&nbsp; consent through repetition rather than persuasion.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Russia as a Container for Western Failure&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Within this configuration, Russia serves as a convenient container for Western contradictions.&nbsp; External threat absorbs internal failure, sanctions are moralised even as they intensify domestic&nbsp; hardship, military budgets expand while healthcare, housing, and education contract, and dissent&nbsp; is framed as danger rather than disagreement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>Why Putin\u2019s Message Provokes Panic&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>The unease provoked by Putin\u2019s address arises from his refusal to operate within these&nbsp; constraints. He does not seek validation from Western institutions, but speaks directly to material&nbsp; conditions and attributes crisis to elite self-interest rather than foreign sabotage. This refusal&nbsp; explains both the circulation of the message and the defensive reactions it provokes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span>A Crisis of Western Representation&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Russia, like all societies, contains tensions and contradictions, yet the insistence on moral&nbsp; binaries obscures a deeper crisis of legitimacy within the West itself. Many citizens now&nbsp; experience less security, less mobility, and less political voice than previous generations, while&nbsp; being assured that they inhabit the most free societies on earth.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When a foreign leader articulates what domestic power avoids, the issue is not loyalty or&nbsp; influence, but representation. Western systems respond to critique with censorship, panic, and&nbsp; narrative enforcement because they have lost the capacity to speak honestly about their own&nbsp; arrangements of power, within which responsibility continues to flow downward while decision making authority remains concentrated at the top.
