Serious concerns have rippled through South African communities following revelations of a sophisticated crime cartel allegedly infiltrating the South African Police Service (SAPS), eroding public trust, and heightening fears for safety.<\/span><\/p>\n

The shocking disclosures came to light on eighth day of the Madlanga Commission last month, when Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo provided vital testimony about a significant organized crime syndicate dubbed the “Big 5\u201d<\/span>consisted of five key individuals Vusimuzi \u201cCat\u201d Matlala and Katiso “KT” Matlala.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Khumalo, this cartel has noticeably embedded itself within criminal networks and the country’s political, economic, and law enforcement structures.<\/span><\/p>\n

The syndicate allegedly includes controversial tenderpreneurs Vusimuzi \u201cCat\u201d Matlala, Katiso \u201cKT\u201d Molefe, and other unidentified figures with significant influence.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe cartel is sophisticated and deeply entrenched,\u201d Khumalo said in his testimony at the commission probing alleged criminal capture of the justice system. <\/span><\/p>\n

The impact of this alleged infiltration resonates deeply in some of the affected communities. <\/span><\/p>\n

Henry Myataza, a property developer and resident of Daveyton, expressed frustration over the police\u2019s inability or unwillingness to handle drug-related crime. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the biggest challenges we have is drugs that are easily accessible in our communities, especially among young people\u2026 <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSeveral times we have tried to bring this attention to the police, but nobody gets arrested. When arrests do happen, those who report are often threatened,\u201d Myataza said. <\/span><\/p>\n

Many people have lost faith in the SAPS,\u201d he explained. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cAs a community, we try to protect ourselves, but it\u2019s hard when some have jobs and other commitments. I think even the good police officers feel discouraged in this environment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Raymond Methraj Sakloo, Public Relations Officer for Community Police Forums in the eThekwini region, emphasised how internal power struggles have taken precedence over serving the public. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"iframeWrapper\"><\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cWhile they muscle against each other, the people we serve continue to suffer,\u201d Sakloo said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis indicates that ordinary people are not a priority within the SAPS. Power and internal disputes drive the feud, leaving all of us caught in the incompetence displayed by the police.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>He added that several families in Durban South have approached him after their police cases failed to progress, reinforcing a common theme of stalled justice and ineffective policing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Specialist Investigator Mike Bolhuis, founder of Specialised Security Services, highlighted the corrosive effects of police corruption in a published report on his website. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cCorruption within SAPS continues to undermine public trust, obstruct justice, and weaken national security,\u201d Bolhuis wrote. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cPublic confidence collapses, discouraging victims from reporting crimes or testifying. Honest officers feel betrayed by leadership failures.
