The first group of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) troops is set to return from their deployment in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as part of the Southern African Development Community Mission in the DRC (SAMIDRC).<\/p>\n
The soldiers are expected to arrive at Air Force Base Bloemspruit in Bloemfontein on June 13, 2025, at midday.<\/p>\n
The return of the troops will mark a pivotal moment for the SANDF, which has participated in a mission designed to stabilise the region and foster peace amid ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Wednesday, the SANDF said: “The troops will be welcomed by the Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, accompanied by the members of the Military Command Council.”<\/p>\n
After the welcoming, the Minister will address members of the media in a briefing scheduled for 2pm at the 44 Parachute Regiment in Tempe Military Base.<\/p>\n
This will provide an opportunity for the Minister to reflect on the mission, share insights on the experiences of the soldiers, and discuss the ongoing role of the SANDF in peacekeeping missions in Africa and beyond.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the media have been invited to witness both the arrival and the subsequent briefing.<\/p>\n
For those interested in travelling to Bloemfontein for this significant event, transport will be arranged, departing from the Armscor Building at 14:00 from the visitors\u2019 parking area.<\/p>\n
Last month, Lieutenant General Rudzani Maphwanya provided clarity on the phased withdrawal.<\/p>\n
Maphwanya explained that the movement of personnel and logistics started on April 29, 2025, with the departure of the first group from eastern DRC via road through Rwanda to Tanzania.<\/p>\n
He reassured the nation that most logistical equipment will be transported by sea from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, to South Africa. <\/p>\n
