Desmond Tutu, a close supporter of Nelson Mandela, was instrumental in ending racial segregation. Together with Mandela, he stood up against the white minority government\u2019s prejudice against the black majority in South Africa.<\/p>\n
The revered cleric died at the age of 90.<\/p>\n
Tutu received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his contribution to the struggle. He was best known for his work as an\u00a0anti-apartheid\u00a0and human rights activist.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Desmond Tutu formed his objective as \u201ca democratic and just society without racial divisions\u201d, and he set forward the following points as minimum demands:<\/p>\n
1. equal civil rights for all
2. the abolition of South Africa\u2019s passport laws
3. a common system of education
4. the cessation of forced deportation from South Africa to the so-called \u201chomelands\u201d<\/p>\n
His death has come as a shock to the nation as condolences have poured in from all facets of the South African society.<\/p>\n
President Cyril Ramaphosa described his death as \u201canother chapter of bereavement in our nation\u2019s farewell to a generation of outstanding South Africans\u201d.<\/p>\n
