Pretoria \u2013 Foreign Affairs Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov said his country appreciated and respected South Africa\u2019s stance on the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.<\/p>\n
Co-chairing a bilateral meeting in Pretoria with Minister of International Relations and Co-operation Naledi Pandor on Monday, Lavrov said South Africa had demonstrated a \u201cresponsible\u201d approach.<\/p>\n
\u201cI would like to highly appreciate the position of principle of South Africa, including the position in which you, Madam Minister (Pandor), introduced in your recent interview.<\/p>\n
\u201cI respect the openness and the responsible approach which you demonstrated on the basis of your allegiance to the key national interests of South Africa and its people,\u201d said Lavrov.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, I look forward to the negotiations, and once again thank you for your invitation, and for your hospitality.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lavrov said dialogue between the two parties is \u201cvery much confidential, friendly, open, sincere\u201d. He said he appreciated the close contact.<\/p>\n
Moving on, Lavrov said his country was in favour of peaceful, negotiated resolution of disputes.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnfortunately most of the conflicts launched by our Western colleagues did not lead to any improvement of the situation. This is not something that we will inherit.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith regards to the situation between us and Ukraine, it is well known that we supported the proposal of Ukrainian side to negotiate in the special military operation and by the end of March, in Istanbul, two delegations agreed on the principles to settle this conflict. It is well known, it was published openly that our American, British and some European colleagues told Ukraine that it is too early to deal,\u201d said Lavrov.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, the arrangement that was agreed was never revisited by the Kiev regime. In September, President (Volodymyr) Zelenskiy signed a decree prohibiting all Ukrainian officials to negotiate on anything with the Russian Federation.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the present conflict could be traced back to that \u201clack of negotiation\u201d.<\/p>\n
Lavrov is in South Africa on an official visit at Pandor\u2019s invitation. The tour has attracted criticism from some sections owing to Russia\u2019s invasion of its neighbour, Ukraine, given South Africa\u2019s \u201cneutral\u201d stance in the conflict.<\/p>\n
However, South Africa has maintained strong ties with its partners in the BRICS forum\u00a0\u2013 Brazil, India, Russia and China.<\/p>\n
Diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and South Africa were established on February\u00a028 1992.<\/p>\n
In 2022, South Africa and the Russian Federation celebrated 30 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the Department of International Relations and Co-operation said the historical links between the two countries remained strong.<\/p>\n
The former USSR was one of the key supporters of the struggle for liberation in South Africa. South Africa became the first African state to recognise the independence of the Russian Federation after the dissolution of the USSR.<\/p>\n
The Declaration on a Strategic Partnership between the South Africa and Russia was signed on the margins of the 5th BRICS Summit which was held in Durban in March 2013.<\/p>\n
That declaration set the principles and framework for an equitable and mutually beneficial partnership that would support the two countries\u2019 national development priorities, the African agenda and the establishment of a peaceful, just and democratic global governance system. The signing of the declaration followed the South Africa-Russia Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation that was signed during President Vladimir Putin\u2019s visit to South Africa in 2006.<\/p>\n
Political bilateral relations between South Africa and Russia, which cover a range of issues, are at a strategic level. However, analysts have highlighted that the current economic relations between the two friendly nations do not match the high level of political relations.<\/p>\n
