Genesis BBQ has signed a major franchise agreement with local partner Good Tree South Africa, a distributor of Korean food goods in South Africa.
The deal, signed recently in Seoul, positions South Africa as the brand’s strategic springboard into Africa.
Founded in 1995, Genesis BBQ has grown into one of Korea’s most successful fast-food names.
Genesis BBQ Chairman Yoon Hong-geun and Good Tree South Africa CEO Lee Dong-il attended the signing ceremony at the Korean company’s headquarters in Seoul’s Songpa District on Nov. 5.
“South Africa is our strategic cornerstone for expanding into the African market and promoting K-food globally,” Yoon said.
“We’ll introduce new localized menu items and spread Korean food culture centered on K-chicken.”
World-wide obsession with Korean fried chicken
Genesis BBQ currently operates 2,400 restaurants in Korea and about 700 overseas in 57 countries and is known for its super-crisp chicken finished in bold Korean flavours such as soy-garlic, honey-glaze, fiery sauces and the signature “half-and-half” combo that lets you try two coatings in one serving.
The brand’s rise, part of the broader Korean-food wave, ties in with the global fascination with “K-chicken” culture.
Why South Africa?
South Africa is a natural fit for the brand. South Africans consume on average 36 kg of chicken per person annually – more than double the global average.
Following the announcement, the social-media buzz has already begun.
Food-lovers online are speculating how Genesis BBQ will tailor its menu for South African tastes -will the glaze be spicier? Will pap be an option on the side?
On X, the remark “K-chicken and pap is going to be a game changer” circulated among local fans.
When doors open, expect a fast-casual experience that fuses quick service with Korean-style presentation.
The Korean parent company has emphasised that menus will be adapted for the local palate, hinting at exclusive South African offerings down the line.
The crispy-fried chicken, already a social-media star abroad, may well become the latest food obsession here as K-culture, from K-pop to K-dramas, continues to rise.
