As the sun rises over the gleaming skyline of Abu Dhabi, there’s an undeniable sense of excitement in the air.

The city’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) reports that 1.4 million overnight guests flocked to the UAE’s capital in the first quarter of 2025, making it clear that Abu Dhabi is fast cementing itself as a premier travel destination.

This influx is merely a glimpse of the ambitious goal set by the city to welcome 39.3 million visitors annually by the decade’s end.

The announcement of The Walt Disney Company’s seventh theme park resort, set to grace Yas Island between 2030 and 2033, only amplifies the allure of this vibrant city.

It will mark the first-ever Disney theme park in the Middle East, signalling a substantial investment in positioning Abu Dhabi as more than just a transit hub but a major travel hotspot in its own right.

“Last year, Dubai was our second-most popular international destination behind London. Travellers are increasingly recognising both Dubai and Abu Dhabi as irresistible holiday destinations, either extending layovers to experience the UAE or planning dedicated trips to explore what each has to offer,” said Antoinette Turner, general manager at Flight Centre South Africa, noting a shift in travel trends.

If you’re still on the fence about adding Abu Dhabi to your travel bucket list, here are five compelling reasons why it deserves a spot on your itinerary.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Dubbed one of the most magnificent architectural feats in the UAE, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque captivates with its stunning white marble domes and intricate mosaic floors.

With the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet and beautiful floral motifs, the mosque is often referred to as the “Flower Mosque”.

Turner advises booking a guided tour, as knowledgeable local guides can transform your visit into an enlightening experience, steeped in history and cultural significance.

“It’s important to be aware and respectful of local customs,” she adds, noting the mosque’s dress code, which may include a loose-fitting abaya offered to visitors.

Year-round sunshine and warm hospitality

Abu Dhabi’s pleasant climate, particularly during the cooler winter months (averaging around 25°C), aligns perfectly with South Africa’s long end-of-year school holidays, making it an ideal family getaway.

The city welcomes visitors with warm Emirati hospitality and a diverse array of family-friendly accommodations.

Turner recommends discussing accommodation options with your travel advisor to find the best fit for your needs.

“Don’t miss the chance to soak in the balmy weather from the water, whether on a speedboat tour or a traditional dhow cruise,” she added.

Desert adventures

No visit to Abu Dhabi is complete without venturing into the boundless desert.

The area offers thrilling activities, from sandboarding and dune bashing to camel rides and stargazing evenings beneath the stars.

“A desert adventure is the highlight of any trip to Abu Dhabi,” explains Turner, pointing out that many operators bundle activities into comprehensive day trips.

Local travel experts can recommend reputable operators for the best deals around.

Food and culinary experiences

For food enthusiasts, Abu Dhabi presents a flourishing culinary scene.

A must-visit is the Stratos restaurant, known for its revolving design and breathtaking 360-degree views of the city’s skyline and the turquoise Arabian Gulf.

“It’s a very touristy thing to do,” Turner admits. “But why not indulge while enjoying a great steak and stunning vistas?”

Al Ain, the living oasis of Abu Dhabi

For those eager to witness a vibrant desert oasis, a trip to Al Ain is essential.

Just a 90-minute drive from Abu Dhabi, this UNESCO Heritage Site boasts a wealth of activities, from climbing Jebel Hafit – the UAE’s second-highest peak – to walking through lush oases and white-water rafting at Wadi Adventure, wherein lies the natural hot springs.

Lastly, with an increasingly efficient flight network between South Africa and the UAE, visiting Abu Dhabi has never been more accessible.

The city not only meets but exceeds expectations, promising an immersive holiday filled with excitement, magic, and unforgettable experiences.
