Severe weather warning: Localised flooding hits Cape Town

Parts of Cape Town experienced localised flooding on Tuesday morning as heavy downpours swept across the Western Cape, prompting the City’s Disaster Risk Management teams into action.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell says the centre received multiple reports of flooding, particularly affecting roadways.

“In the main, roadways have been affected, due to the volume of water entering the stormwater systems,” Powell said.

“Teams are attending to service requests received by the Disaster Operations Centre.”

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for disruptive rainfall and damaging winds across the Western Cape, cautioning about potential flooding in vulnerable areas and travel disruptions due to the adverse weather.

The rainfall forecast showed an 80% probability of widespread rain along the Cape south-western coast, with interior regions experiencing a 60% chance of scattered showers.

Despite the heavy rainfall, no major incidents or injuries have been reported.

Weather alert for the Western Cape

“No other major impacts have been recorded thus far,” Powell confirmed.

The current weather conditions are expected to ease later in the evening. In the meantime, the City has urged residents to take precautions.

“We remind the public to please remain vigilant, particularly on the roads, and to report any weather-related emergencies to the City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre,” said Powell.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to avoid waterlogged areas and drive cautiously as clean-up operations continue.
