South Africans can expect a sharp weather split this weekend, with widespread storms drenching the northern and eastern provinces while intense heat settles over the west and south.
Saturday marks the start of the unstable conditions, with thunderstorms sweeping across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State, North West and KwaZulu-Natal. Rain chances reach 60% across these regions and climb to 80% in the north-eastern parts of KZN.
Limpopo faces a 30% chance of afternoon storms, while the Eastern Cape’s interior sees scattered showers around Cradock and Mthatha.
Meanwhile, the Western Cape, Northern Cape and much of the southern interior will bake under hot to very hot conditions. Sunshine dominates from Sutherland through the Karoo, with only a small 30% chance of isolated showers near Beaufort West.
Sunday continues the pattern, with widespread thunderstorms lingering over Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State, North West and KZN, maintaining a 60% chance of rain. Limpopo again holds around a 30% chance of showers, mainly in the far north. The Eastern Cape interior stays unsettled with more scattered storms.
In stark contrast, the Western Cape and Northern Cape remain dry and extremely hot through the day, with fire-danger conditions possible in places.
Along both coastlines, conditions stay mostly mild but breezy, with strong winds likely along the south-western shores.
