The ANC has welcomed the return of ousted Umkhanyakude District Municipality Mayor Siphile Mdaka back to his position.

Mdaka, an ANC member who had been a mayor in the northern KwaZulu-Natal municipality since 2021, was sworn in on Thursday.

He was removed from his position by the IFP through a vote of no confidence early last month and replaced by the IFP’s Comfort Khumalo.

However the IFP and the ANC have since come to a new arrangement in the municipality which led to Khumalo resigning from the position and Mdaka being re-elected.

It is understood that as part of the deal, the ANC will vote against a motion of no confidence brought by the MK Party against Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal congratulated Mdaka on his election as mayor on Thursday.

“His election represents a renewed commitment to stability, effective governance, and the accelerated delivery of services to the people of Umkhanyakude. The ANC is confident that under his leadership, the district will advance the mandate of building communities that are safe, well-governed, and developmental.

“We wish Cde Mdaka strength and wisdom as he undertakes this important responsibility, and we reaffirm our support to ensure that the work of transforming our communities continues with vigour and integrity.”

Meanwhile the motion of no confidence against Ntuli will be heard in the provincial legislature on December 15.
