Championship on ice: Why Lando Norris must fight to the final checkered flag

Lando Norris’ charge toward a maiden Formula One world championship has been one of the defining stories of the 2025 season, but as the final stretch approaches, one thing has become increasingly clear: there will be no early coronation.

Despite his consistent podiums, sprint victories, and moments of sheer brilliance, the McLaren star cannot seal the title ahead of schedule. Every remaining point on the table will matter, and the final three race weekends promise to be a high-pressure test of composure, execution, and raw pace.

For much of the year, Norris appeared to be building an unstoppable rhythm. His early-season win tally, combined with McLaren’s impressive development rate, placed him firmly in control of the championship picture.

But the margins in modern Formula One are razor thin, and the resurgence of key rivals, most notably team-mate Oscar Piastri and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, has prevented the kind of runaway advantage that would normally allow a driver to clinch the title with races to spare.

The mathematics tell the story. With only three rounds left, including a crucial sprint weekend, the points still available keep the championship alive for multiple drivers. Even a dominant performance from Norris at the upcoming Las Vegas round cannot mathematically eliminate his closest challengers.

Instead, the earliest possible moment for a title triumph shifts to the Qatar sprint, an unusual scenario that underscores both the parity of this season and the pressure that now rests on Norris’ shoulders.

Complicating matters is the dynamic within McLaren itself. Piastri, now a multiple race winner and more consistent than ever, has emerged as not just a distant rival but a genuine week-to-week threat. The Australian has matched Norris across several key weekends and has the raw pace to punish even minor errors.

Their internal duel, though conducted respectfully, has squeezed every drop from McLaren’s machinery, and it means Norris can ill afford a single slip in the coming rounds.

Meanwhile, Verstappen remains Verstappen: opportunistic, relentless, and capable of snatching large points hauls whenever a race unfolds in his favour. Though Red Bull’s form has fluctuated, the Dutchman’s experience in title battles means he cannot be discounted.

The comfort of an early title would have allowed the Briton to drive freely, shake off pressure, and enjoy the fruits of a long-awaited breakthrough.

Instead, he must now approach each session — practice, qualifying, sprint, and race — with the acute awareness that every point may ultimately decide the championship outcome. Fine margins, pit-stop precision, tyre management, and racecraft under pressure will define the next few weeks.

Whether Norris ultimately prevails or one of his rivals overturns the deficit, the closing chapter of the 2025 season promises to be intense, dramatic, and uncompromising. One thing is certain: the job is not done.
