One person has been shot dead as a manhunt for Jabulani Moyo, wanted for killing two police officers in Roodepoort, led to a deadly operation in Cosmo City.

This comes after one suspect was shot dead and another was arrested by police in Cosmo City, north of Johannesburg, on Saturday.

Moyo is wanted in connection with the killing of two police officers in Roodepoort, Gauteng, on Friday, August 8, 2025.

He allegedly shot dead the two officers from a trio task team while they were transporting him back to Boksburg Prison following a court appearance.

Gauteng police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo, said police foiled a planned business robbery after officers received information that suspects were preparing to target businesses in the Honeydew and Fairlands areas.

“This morning, they received information that the suspects were in the area. They then spotted two vehicles matching the description provided – a white Polo and a grey Audi,” he said.

As officers approached, the suspects got out of the vehicles and opened fire.

He said a shootout followed.

“During the exchange, two suspects jumped into the Polo while the others fled on foot,” Masondo said.

Police pursued the Polo to Cosmo City. When the vehicle stopped, one suspect got out and continued firing at officers.

“There was another shootout here, during which the suspect was shot and killed,” he said.

Masondo confirmed that another suspect was arrested inside the Polo.

He said police believe that among the group planning the robbery was Jabulani Moyo, the fugitive wanted for killing two Roodepoort police officers.

“Moyo is the suspect who escaped from lawful custody in Johannesburg earlier this year, and there have been several operations targeting him,” he said.

Masondo added that they had information suggesting Moyo was part of the group involved in the planned robbery.

“We suspect he is one of those who escaped. Our members are still on the ground following up on intelligence, and we believe we will arrest them soon. For now, they remain on the run.”

He confirmed that the suspect killed at the scene and the one arrested are both foreign nationals.

Asked for an update on the murders of the two police officers allegedly shot by Moyo, Masondo said the case remains under investigation.

“It is being handled by the DPCI. The main suspect, Jabulani Moyo, is still at large,” he said.

The DPCI is the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks.
