Just a week ago they were standing together in battle trying to win a first-ever World Cup for the Proteas Women’s team in India.
Now, Proteas teammates Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp are going head-to-head in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). The pair fronted up for the Adelaide Strikers and Melbourne Stars, respectively, in their first match since their World Cup final disappointment against India in Navi Mumbai last Sunday.
The match was abandoned due to bad weather during the Strikers’ run-chase, but not before Kapp failed with the bat, being dismissed for a three-ball duck, as she edged Australian seamer D’Arcy Brown behind.

The Stars innings was held together by half-centuries from former Australian World Cup-winning captain Meg Lanning (60 off 41 balls) and current Aussie all-rounder Annabel Sutherland (54 not out off 39 balls).
Sutherland was named alongside Wolvaardt and Kapp in the ICC World Cup Team of the Tournament for their exploits in India and Sri Lanka.
Wolvaardt opened the batting for the Strikers, and immediately went up against Kapp, who took the new ball for the Stars.

Kapp enjoyed greater success with the ball, having England opener Tammy Beaumont caught in the covers off a leading edge for a duck.
Wolvaardt, though, struck back for the Strikers by clipping her Proteas teammate Kapp through the leg-side for a boundary.
The Strikers could only face 4.2 overs with Wolvaardt moving to 10 not out before the heavens opened as the visitors finished on 32/1 in response to Melbourne’s 184/5.
Kapp and Wolvaardt will be in action again on Friday when their respective teams face the Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades. Fellow Proteas all-rounder Nadine de Klerk has already featured for the Brisbane Heat, top scoring with 40 against the Renegades.
