If Cape Town’s summer energy is any indication of what’s trending in fashion, then we’re in for a vibrant, stylish ride.

On Thursday, I attended Ackermans’ summer fashion launch, held at the luxurious Cape Grace Hotel, perfectly perched on the private quay of the V&A Waterfront.

With the bright blue sky, boats docked at the marina, and the stunning Table Mountain as a backdrop, the event felt like stepping into a chic summer dream.

And let me tell you, the fashion moments were just as breathtaking as the views.

The guest list was a who’s who of South Africa’s social and fashion elite. Cape Town’s beloved radio personality, Carl Wastie, turned heads in a crisp off-white linen shirt with blue embroidery paired with navy linen pants, both from the retailer’s unreleased collection.

Breakfast show host Sherlin Barends was all smiles, exuding effortless elegance in a cute white mini dress and statement shades, while former Miss South Africa 2007, Tansey Coetzee, brought her signature grace to the occasion.

Entrepreneurial powerhouse Olwethu Leshabane, known for her women’s lifestyle platform Art of Superwoman, was a vision in a brown bodycon dress with gold off-shoulder detailing.

And newlywed Ntando Rambani positively glowed (and no, it wasn’t just her highlighter) in a monochrome black-and-white ensemble featuring a knitted vest and flared skirt.

Her radiance was a testament to the transformative power of love and good fashion!

The theme of the collection was clear: inclusive summer fashion for every kind of woman. Ackermans’ creative team leaned into bright, airy, and bold colours, a refreshing departure from the muted beige and brown tones that have dominated the “rich aunt aesthetic” of recent seasons.

Linda Mtoba hit the nail on the head when she once called out this trend, urging us to embrace individuality and creativity in our style. And it seems our favourite retailer listened.

The collection offered outfits for all ages, crafted from linen and cotton voile. These lightweight, breathable, and silky-soft materials are the ultimate summer companions.

Think effortless Instagram-worthy moments on Italy’s Amalfi Coast or dreamy days on a Mauritian beach.

Blues, whites, and pops of yellow stole the show as an emerging colour trend that flatters every skin tone and style preference. Whether you’re into flared maxi dresses, tailored waistcoats or breezy shorts, the collection has something for everyone.

The runway showcased pieces that effortlessly balanced comfort and elegance. It was clear why linen trousers, dresses, and matching sets are having their moment: the fabric is breathable, chic, and perfect for South Africa’s warm summer days.

Butter yellow, in particular, was a standout. From flowy dresses to tailored separates, this cheerful shade radiated. And let’s not forget the waistcoat, a key trend this season.

Whether paired with shorts or wide-leg pants, it’s a versatile piece that can transition seamlessly from a casual brunch to evening drinks.

In between the laughter and mingling, I managed to steal a few moments with some of the event’s stylish attendees to get their summer style tips.

Leshabane, now a proud brand ambassador for the brand, shared her philosophy on fashion: “One of the exciting things about being part of this campaign is literally women being their authentic selves.

“My number one style tip is this: dress your mood, dress your vibe. Don’t be restricted; there are no rules to fashion. It’s ever-evolving. If you love something, buy it, wear it, own it!”

Tansey Coetzee echoed the sentiment of effortless style, emphasising the importance of versatile accessories: “A cute pair of sunnies is a must; you can never have too many. And a kimono? That’s a summer essential!”

The atmosphere at the event was electric, with laughter, networking, and shared admiration for the collection filling the air.

Guests sipped on curated cocktails while soaking up the luxury of the Cape Grace Hotel, home to the award-winning Bascule Bar. Known for its extensive whisky collection and fine South African wines, the bar set the tone for an event that was equal parts sophisticated and laid-back.

Whether you’re planning a coastal getaway, heading to a garden party, or simply looking to refresh your wardrobe, this collection promises something special for every summer moment.

As I left the event, watching the sun begin to set over the marina, I already knew what my brunch outfit would look like. PS: butter yellow waistcoat and linen shorts!
