The skies above Ottery were alive with colour and joy this past weekend as the Cape Town International Kite Festival made its long-awaited return. Hosted over two days at its new home, the Youngsfield Military Base, the festival soared back into the hearts of Capetonians after being paused for more than five years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Organised by Cape Mental Health, the event was not only a visual spectacle but also a heartfelt celebration of courage and resilience.

This year’s theme, “#CourageToFly,” honoured the bravery it takes to face life’s challenges, particularly those linked to mental health.

Families, friends, and kite enthusiasts from across the city gathered under spring skies to watch an array of vibrant kites dance in the wind, from intricately designed show kites to homemade creations proudly crafted by children.

The festival featured both local and international kiters, whose giant, colourful kites transformed the sky into a canvas of hope and unity.

Professor Ingrid Daniels, CEO of Cape Mental Health, said the return of the festival marked an emotional milestone.

“The Cape Town International Kite Festival returned after five and a half years, showcasing the two-day festival at Youngsfield Military Base, its new home, with aplomb and beauty,” she said.

“The event brought hope, community and colour to the sky with spectacular show kites flown by international and local kiters attracting the support of more than 7,300 people over the two days.

“It was simply spectacular and a great success. The festival exceeded our expectations and will live on in our memory and hearts.”

Daniels added that the strong community turnout not only uplifted spirits but also helped raise vital funds for mental health initiatives.

“The groundswell of support by festivalgoers made it possible for Cape Mental Health to lift spirits, facilitate conversations about mental health and raise funds to continue providing free mental health services. Every kite that took to the sky reminded us of our fragility and our resilience.”
