The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, has expressed her condolences to the families of six people who lost their lives in a horror crash on the R524 road outside Thohoyandou in the Vhembe District.
The accident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning near Thulamela Municipality.
According to the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety, four passengers died at the scene, while the driver and another person, who were both seriously injured, later succumbed to their injuries in hospital — bringing the death toll to six. One passenger remains hospitalised.
Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicle lost control and veered off the road, scattering passengers across the scene. Authorities said a detailed investigation will determine the exact cause of the accident.
MEC Mathye said she was deeply saddened by the tragedy and extended her sympathies to the bereaved families.
“On behalf of the Department of Transport and Community Safety and the people of Limpopo, I wish to convey my deepest condolences to the families of those who perished and wish the injured a speedy recovery,” said Mathye.
“I once more urge drivers to drive with care.”
The latest crash comes barely a week after another devastating accident in Limpopo — when a bus carrying passengers along the N1 near Makhado (Louis Trichardt) plunged off an embankment, killing 43 people.
recently reported that investigators have since linked that disaster to faulty brakes and overloading, raising renewed concerns about vehicle roadworthiness, speeding, and general driver behaviour on the province’s roads.
MEC Mathye said the back-to-back fatalities underscore the urgent need for vigilance on the roads, especially during Transport Month, when safety campaigns are being intensified.
“We are continuing to deploy law enforcement officers throughout the province to monitor driver conduct and ensure compliance with traffic regulations,” she said.
“Drivers are once again urged to be vigilant as they travel to different destinations.”
The provincial department reiterated its commitment to road safety education, intensified visibility of traffic officers, and strict enforcement of the law to prevent further loss of life.
