The Proteas began their World Test Championship defence in Lahore in trying circumstances.
Independent Media’s Zaahier Adams rates the playing XI that did duty in Lahore.
Aiden Markram – 4 out of 10
Lost the all-important toss in Temba Bavuma’s absence, but cannot be blamed for that. Wasn’t able to capitalise on a start in the first innings followed by a horrendous heave in the run-chase. Also dropped Salman Agha early on that allowed the match-winning partnership with Mohammad Rizwan to grow.
Ryan Rickelton – 8
The Proteas’ most accomplished batter across both innings. Clearly enjoys batting against Pakistan. Showed good temperament and defensive technique, facing a cumulative 378 balls and 282 minutes at the crease.
Wiaan Mulder – 4
His Test record 367 not out may have earned him time at No 3, but the jury remains undecided whether he is indeed the correct option at first drop. Was tentative in both innings.
Tony de Zorzi – 8
Started nervously, but grew into his innings to fashion a memorable second Test century. Was undone by Shaheen Shah’s reverse swing in the second.
Tristan Stubbs – 2
Seems completely at the sea at the moment. He is not the player that coach Shukri Conrad was hoping to build his Test batting unit around when he initially selected the Knysna-born youngster. Is in need of a break from the spotlight.
Dewald Brevis – 6.5
A first-ball duck followed by a counter-attacking half century in the second. Showed bravery in taking on Noman Ali and gave Pakistan their first real fright of the Test.
Kyle Verreynne – 6
Batting was indifferent in both innings. But wicket-keeping was perfect in conditions that were especially tough for the glovemen. Took every chance – both catches and stumpings – that came his way.
Senuran Muthusamy – 9
Bowled brilliantly in both innings for his 11-wicket match haul. Kept Pakistan in check whenever they looked to be getting away and gave the Proteas a real chance of achieving the impossible. Loses a perfect 10 rating as he would have wanted to contribute more with the bat.
Simon Harmer – 7.5
Arguably the Proteas’ most penetrative spin bowler in the Test despite Muthusamy’s heroics. Earned success in the second innings with a four-wicket haul. Would be satisfied with his comeback after a two-year spell in the Test wilderness.
Prenelan Subrayen – 6
Came through his first international since his action was called into question without any alarms. Performed an adequate job as the third spinner in the trio.
Kagiso Rabada – 7
Conditions were trying for the fast bowlers, but Rabada bowled his heart out. Managed to get the early breakthrough in the first innings before delivering one his finest spells in the second. He will bowl a lot worse for much greater reward in his Test career.
