Visitors from 32 countries are expected to gather in Durban for the 9th ICF Ocean Canoe Racing World Championship, taking place between October 17-19.

The World Championship race is due to kick off from the Durban Undersea Club and finish 34km later at the Westbrook beach, near Tongaat, north of the Durban CBD.

“The influx of international athletes, spectators, and media will boost local hospitality, increase hotel occupancy, and reinforce Durban’s beachfront as a world-class sports and leisure precinct.

“Stunning weather, warm waters, and an ultra-friendly and hospitable paddling community make Durban the ideal venue for an international event of this stature,” a spokesperson for the eThekwini Municipality said in a statement.

Meanwhile City mayor, Cyril Xaba, said hosting an event of this magnitude shows Durban’s capabilities of staging world-class events.
