Moloisane steps in for suspended Mbokazi as Bafana regroup for Rwanda

Stellenbosch FC defender Thabo Moloisane has been drafted into the Bafana Bafana squad ahead of Tuesday’s decisive Fifa World Cup 2026 qualifier against Rwanda at the Mbombela Stadium.

The 26-year-old comes in as a replacement for the suspended Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who was sent off in stoppage time during Friday night’s frustrating goalless draw against Zimbabwe at the Moses Mabhida Stadium — a result that left South Africa’s qualification hopes hanging by a thread.

That red card forced national team coach Hugo Broos to reshuffle his defensive options, and Moloisane’s late inclusion is a familiar storyline. The Stellenbosch centre-back was also a belated call-up last month when German-based defender Ime Okon withdrew through injury.

Moloisane seized his chance in that camp, producing a solid performance in the 3-0 win over Lesotho in Bloemfontein before making way for Mbokazi in the following match — a 1-1 draw with Nigeria.

His return to the fold highlights Broos’ continued faith in players who have adapted well to the national team’s structure when called upon at short notice.

For the clash against Zimbabwe, Broos opted for an Orlando Pirates pairing of Mbokazi and Nkosinathi Sibisi in central defence, even though Sibisi has seen limited game time at club level this season. The duo handled the Warriors’ physicality well but were left frustrated as Bafana failed to convert dominance into victory.

Now, with Mbokazi ruled out, the veteran Belgian tactician faces another selection dilemma.

He will have to choose between Sibisi, Malibongwe Khoza, Khulumani Ndamane, and Moloisane for the all-important clash against a disciplined Rwandan side that remains difficult to break down.

Broos will be hoping Moloisane’s experience under Steve Barker at Stellenbosch — where he has been part of one of the league’s most organised defensive units — can provide the balance and composure needed in Mbombela.

The Stellies man’s reading of the game and aerial ability could also prove crucial in neutralising Rwanda’s set-piece threat.

Tuesday’s encounter now carries added emotional weight for Bafana, who slipped to second in Group C after Benin’s 1-0 victory over Rwanda. South Africa must win to stand any chance of progressing to the next stage, while also relying on results elsewhere.

The inclusion of Moloisane provides a timely boost in a camp that must quickly recover from Friday’s disappointment. His calm presence, coupled with his familiarity with several squad members from domestic competition, could offer Broos the stability his backline desperately needs.

As the race for qualification nears its conclusion, all eyes will be on Mbombela — where Bafana must show resilience and belief if they are to keep their World Cup dream alive.
