The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) has cautioned the public against the spread of misinformation surrounding the return of South African nationals who were detained in Israel after participating in a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla.
Dirco spokesperson Chrispin Phiri confirmed on Monday that arrangements for the delegation’s return are under way but clarified the nature of government involvement.
“The delegation’s return is being facilitated with the financial support of their families and solidarity groups. The South African Government’s role has been one of diplomatic facilitation and engagement with all relevant parties,” said Phiri.
The clarification comes amid conflicting reports and speculation on social media regarding the government’s financial or logistical role in the activists’ repatriation.
Dirco reiterated that its mandate in this matter has been strictly diplomatic, focusing on ensuring the safety, welfare, and lawful treatment of the South African citizens during their detention in Israel.
The department has urged the public and media outlets to rely on official communication channels to avoid amplifying false or misleading information.
“We continue to monitor developments closely and remain in communication with all stakeholders. It is important that verified information guides public understanding of this sensitive matter,” Phiri added.
Disgraced former politician, Renaldo Gouws was among those claiming this.
“Why are South African taxpayers paying for the deportation flights of the six South Africans who were arrested by the Israeli Military Forces? This money should be recovered from them individually,” he posted on X.
The Embassy of Israel in SA also spread the falsehood on Monday.
“Mr President @CyrilRamaphosa: We trust @DIRCO_ZA has informed you that all South Africans who tried to enter illegally will be expelled tomorrow via Jordan,” the embassy said. “As always, it’s the South African taxpayers who get the honor of paying for their fellow citizens’ deportation tickets.”
