With spring here, it’s time to retire those winter boots and step into the sunshine with your cutest sandals.
However, before you slip into your favourite pair, make sure your feet are in top shape with these five foot care tips.
1. Soak and exfoliate
Kick off your spring foot care with a relaxing foot soak.
Fill a basin with warm water and add a handful of Epsom salts. Soak your feet for 15 to 20 minutes to soften any rough skin.
This not only eases tired muscles but also makes exfoliating much easier.
A pumice stone is an excellent tool for removing dead skin, leaving your feet smooth.
2. Moisturise to avoid cracks
Dry skin is a common issue after winter, especially if you haven’t taken the time to moisturise. Now is the moment to pamper your feet. Apply a rich cream or even Vaseline before bedtime to help lock in moisture and prevent cracking.
Consider wearing socks overnight to further aid absorption.
3. Trim and inspect your toenails
With your feet often hidden in boots during winter, pedicures may have been neglected.
It’s time to check your toenails for any ingrown nails or signs of fungal infections.
Cut your toenails straight across to avoid ingrown nails. If necessary, sprinkle foot powder on your feet and in your shoes to soak up moisture and fight bacteria that can cause fungal issues.
4. Choose the right footwear
As you swap winter boots for lighter shoes and sandals, it’s important to choose footwear that fits well and offers proper support.
Ill-fitting shoes can lead to painful corns and calluses, especially after long-term use of winter boots. Consider using over-the-counter products for quick relief from calluses and corns to ensure your feet are ready for the season.
5. Keep your feet active
Foot health goes beyond just skin treatment. Incorporate movement into your foot care routine by stretching your feet, wiggling your toes and performing simple exercises like pointing and flexing.
A gentle massage using a tennis ball can alleviate tension in your arches.
After a long day, elevate your feet for 15 to 20 minutes to improve blood circulation. Walking barefoot on safe, natural surfaces can also soothe your mind and body.
6. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
With spring comes sunshine, and while it’s glorious, the sun’s rays can still pose a risk. Remember to apply sunscreen on any exposed skin, including your feet and ankles, when stepping out in sandals or barefoot.
“We often overlook our feet until there’s a problem. But regular care is easy, rewarding and adds to your overall well-being,” shared Lynsey Hammond, managing director of Kroko, a skincare company in South Africa.
She continued: “A good foot care routine is like spring-cleaning for the body; it helps you feel lighter, fresher and more confident as you move through the season.”
