Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has expressed profound sadness over the passing of Nkosinathi Emmanuel ‘Nathi’ Mthethwa, a former Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, who served South Africa with distinction.

“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Nkosinathi ‘Nathi’ Mthethwa, a dedicated public servant and former Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture,” McKenzie said.

Mthethwa held the position of Minister of Arts and Culture from May 2014 to May 2019, before taking on the expanded portfolio of Sport, Arts and Culture until 2023.

During his tenure, McKenzie said he promoted South Africa’s rich cultural heritage, led initiatives to support artists and stakeholders during the Covid-19 pandemic, and engaged with the creative industries to mitigate the pandemic’s impact.

“His efforts in strengthening the creative economy and promoting South African arts and culture domestically and internationally will remain a lasting legacy.”

McKenzie shared personal memories, recalling his meetings with Mthethwa during his time as South Africa’s Ambassador to France:

“He was collegial, generous with his time, and deeply insightful in his engagements—qualities that defined him as a true gentleman and servant of the people.”

The department extended condolences to Mthethwa’s family, friends, and colleagues, with particular mention of his wife, Ms Philisiwe Buthelezi.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with her and the family during this very difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he added.
