Rampant Griquas hammer young Bulls to reinforce Currie Cup play-off credentials

The in-form Griquas put the depleted Bulls to the sword with a dominant all-round display in their 42-21 Currie Cup victory in the unfamiliar setting of Tuine-Grizzlies Rugby Club in Pretoria West on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulls made the early running, with SA Under-20 hooker Esethu Mnebelele prominent, and they struck first when fullback Stavino Jacobs finished off a flowing move in the fifth minute. Flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain added the extras.

Griquas responded swiftly, right wing Dylan Mart making inroads before a clever reverse pass sent former Blitzbok Gurswin Wehr over. Veteran flyhalf George Whitehead levelled matters with the conversion, before Wehr pounced on an intercept to sprint in for his second as the visitors took control.

The visitors’ forwards then imposed themselves, a rolling maul splintering the Bulls defence before skipper Cebo Dlamini crashed over. With Whitehead faultless off the tee, Griquas went into the break 21-7 up and in complete command.

The second half began badly for the Bulls when captain Nama Xaba was shown yellow for a high tackle. Wehr soon completed his hat-trick after another incisive attack, and No 8 Carl Els added a fifth try from a driving maul.

The Bulls, feeding off scraps and hindered by handling errors and constant changes up front, struggled to build momentum. Griquas, meanwhile, showcased their attacking flair, with centre Zane Bester slicing through to score their sixth try.

A late red card did little to blunt the visitors’ edge, although the Bulls did manage two consolation tries to add a touch of respectability to the final score.

The comprehensive win, Griquas’ first on the road this season, propelled them up to third on the log with 20 points. The Bulls, by contrast, remain in sixth place with 10 points and plenty of work to do.
