South African retail is entering a new era, with brick-and-mortar stores reinventing themselves to win back shoppers lured by the ease of online retail.
Leading the charge is Woolworths, which has unveiled its extensively renovated Tygervalley store in Cape Town, a next-generation space designed to make in-person shopping not just convenient, but an experience worth leaving home for.
After months of anticipation, the store has officially reopened its doors, revealing a new full-line store format that integrates Food, Fashion, Beauty and Home under one roof.
This is the first of its kind in the country, and it’s designed to tempt customers away from their screens and back into the mall.
Brian Mtongaana, Executive Creative Director at Woolworths, explained that the store’s creative design is centred on “human connection and super service”- a “frame for living” philosophy that brings lifestyle, service and experience together in a single space.

Design and features
Each department features its own service pod, where customers can get personalised assistance, pay for their items, and make returns in one place.
Each pod is equipped with it’ own integrated multisensory elements, from signature scents and curated music playlists to trained staff offering expert service.
Parents will appreciate the children’s clothing section, which includes a dedicated play area and baby-changing room, allowing them to shop without having to leave the department.
The pods are inspired by the hospitality industry, evoking the feeling of a hotel reception desk with your own concierge.
The store also boasts wider aisles and uncluttered, curated displays. Design touches nod to the home environment – homeware is displayed as it would be in a kitchen, while clothing appears on dresser-style fixtures with drawers.
Sustainability focus
Tygervalley is also Woolworths’ most environmentally friendly store to date. Energy-saving lighting runs throughout, shop fittings are crafted from timber sourced from invasive trees, and mannequins are made from recycled coffee pods and plant-based resin. Decorative plants and foliage are created from recycled paper.
Enhanced and personalised services
The new store offers a host of personalised services, including:
- Complimentary on-site denim lasering with any denim purchase, allowing customers to personalise their items.
- Free expert tailoring for in-store garment purchases to ensure the perfect fit.
- A complimentary bra-measuring and fitting service with trained staff.
- A redesigned Beauty department at the heart of the store, complete with treatment pods, free hair and skin analysis consultations, and tailored product recommendations.
- New-look Country Road, Trenery and Witchery areas showcasing natural textures, refined finishes and timeless detailing.
- Complimentary professional gift-wrapping with any Woolworths purchase.
Food lovers are well catered for too, with a “What’s Cooking” bar offering samples from popular Taste magazine recipes, a bespoke bakery producing fresh artisanal breads and pastries daily.
There is an upgraded butchery, speciality cheese and fishmonger counters with on-site experts, and a Global Pantry featuring international cuisines from Italian to Mexican.
Mtongaana explains that the Tygervalley store has been designed around a customer-first philosophy: a space where every department tells a story, every product is carefully curated, and every experience feels personal and premium.
