Big Brother Mzansi Season 5 winner, Sweet Guluva, has landed a major acting role in BET’s upcoming daily drama series, Black Gold. The highly anticipated show premieres on 18 August 2025 at 18:30 on DStv Channel 129 and will air Monday to Thursday.

The series is co-produced by Black Brain Pictures and BET, promising gripping drama, betrayal, and power struggles in the world of illegal mining. Black Gold tells the story of Amandla Zungu, played by Nomalanga Shozi, a young woman whose life turns upside down after she is wrongly accused of her father’s death. Betrayed by her stepmother Florence (played by Dawn Thandeka King), Amandla is cast out of her home and forced to survive in a dangerous world.

Determined to reclaim her legacy, Amandla rises through the ranks of the mining underworld while facing betrayal and heartbreak. Florence, the villain behind her downfall, secretly works with her lover Tom Motsepe, portrayed by acting legend Sello Maake KaNcube. The show is set in KwaZulu-Natal and promises twists, danger, and powerful storytelling.

Executive director of Black Brain Pictures, Mandla N, expressed his excitement: “Creating Black Gold was a game-changing experience – it shook us as much as it will shake the audience. Working with BET is about reinvesting in our industry, breaking barriers, and taking a bold step forward for local storytelling.”

While fans of the show are excited, Sweet Guluva’s casting sparked mixed reactions online. Many questioned his acting skills since he is not a trained actor. On X, @Shirlez wrote:

“I pity the kids who are studying drama and arts cause this now is no longer about talent but numbers.”

Another user, @immortalz24, commented: “Ehame BET needs to pull numbers of viewers now they using SG for more views.”

However, not everyone was negative. Some defended Sweet Guluva, pointing to his impressive performances during Big Brother tasks. @matome_prudence said: “To everyone that has doubts or complaints about him, please look for his clips from the show – he’s actually nailing his characters.”

Black Gold premieres on 18 August, and viewers are eager to see if Sweet Guluva proves the doubters wrong.
