Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader, Gayton McKenzie, has suspended his deputy, Kenny Kunene, from the party pending an investigation into his presence at the Sandton home of a businessman, Katiso “KT” Molefe, a suspect in the murder of DJ Sumbody.

In a live broadcast on social media on Tuesday, McKenzie announced that he would also write to the Johannesburg Council informing them that he would remove Kunene as the MMC for Transport to allow the investigations to continue without any delay.

“Kenny Kunene will be investigated and I’m gonna tell you who’s gonna investigate him, lawyers of good character. While he’s being investigated I’m going to remove him from being an MMC, I am going to write to them.

“I’m also going to tell him to stand back from politics for one month until the investigation is done. That’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do in my life, it is the hardest thing to act against Kunene,” he said during the stream.

Kunene was found at the home of Molefe on Monday when police came to arrest the businessman in connection with the brutal killing of Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka.

Sefoka was gunned down in November 2022 in Woodmead, Johannesburg. The shooting also resulted in the death of another person, and a third person was left injured.

On Tuesday, Kunene confirmed that he was at Molefe’s house when police arrived but claimed that he had accompanied a journalist from his media company.

In an interview with eNCA, he agreed to being at the wrong place at the wrong time but said he was introducing a young journalist to Molefe to respond to the murder allegations he was facing.

“These are young journalists; this would have been a great exclusive for them. It was a matter of being at the wrong place at the wrong time,” Kunene said.

However, McKenzie said “Firstly I believe Kenny 100%, I can’t expect everyone to believe him hence we are launching a full investigation to prove what we already know which is that he is innocent. We will share the whole process and findings.”

He defended Kunene and maintained that he was innocent in the matter.

Meanwhile, the DA in Johannesburg called for Kunene’s immediate resignation, following the damning revelations.

Caucus leader, Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, said Kunene’s role at Transport MMC was absolutely untenable because of the fact that he was found during the police raid.
