Kaizer Chiefs’ pre-season tour of the Netherlands was far from perfect in terms of results, but it served its purpose — giving coach Nasreddine Nabi a clearer picture of how his squad is shaping up ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
For the new signings, it was an early test of their ability to adapt to the tactical demands and the expectations that come with representing one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
Flavio Silva
The Portuguese striker still has some way to go before convincing the Amakhosi faithful. His physical attributes are clear — strong in the air and capable of holding the ball up — but he lacked sharpness in front of goal.
Silva didn’t manage to convert the few chances that came his way and often looked isolated when Chiefs struggled to link midfield with attack. While there is still time for him to settle, his tour performance didn’t suggest he’s ready to lead the line just yet.
Ethan Chislett
Chislett’s pre-season lacked big moments, but he showed glimpses of his footballing intelligence. Having played in England for several years, he reads the game well and understands space and movement.
However, he was largely on the periphery in most games, failing to influence play consistently or create clear-cut opportunities. While he looks tactically disciplined and technically sound, Chiefs will want more assertiveness and creativity from a player of his profile.
Nkanyiso Shinga
Shinga quietly went about his business and delivered composed performances at left back. Defensively, he was solid and rarely caught out of position, showing good awareness and discipline.
He didn’t get forward often, but when he did, his passing was neat and efficient. With Bradley Cross also competing for minutes in that position, Shinga’s reliability and calm demeanour could give him the edge. He might not have grabbed headlines, but he offered a steady platform at the back.
Thabiso Monyane

The standout performer of all the new recruits. Monyane brought intensity and purpose every time he was on the pitch. His overlapping runs down the right flank added much-needed width, and he delivered several quality crosses into dangerous areas.
Defensively, he was aggressive but measured, winning duels and tracking back with urgency. Whether deployed as a right back or wing-back, Monyane showed he has the energy and quality to make that position his own.
Chiefs fans will have taken notice — he looked hungry, confident, and ready to fight for a regular starting berth.
Conclusion
Of the four new arrivals, Monyane emerged as the clear front-runner in terms of impact and consistency. Shinga was steady and dependable, while Chislett showed glimpses of quality without quite grabbing control. Silva, meanwhile, still needs time and rhythm to find his feet.
The Netherlands tour may not have been about winning, but for Nabi, it provided crucial insight into which of his new players are ready to step up when the season begins.
