Five people have been killed in a horror crash on the R66 in Gingindlovu in KwaZulu-Natal late on Sunday night.

Samantha Meyrick of IPSS Medical Rescue said among the deceased were a three-year-old and a two-month-old infant.

“A further seven occupants sustained injuries, with four children, all under the age of 14, sustaining serious injuries,” she said.

The injured were all stabilised at the scene before being rushed to various nearby medical facilities for further care.

The Department of Transport and Human Settlements in KZN explained that one of the vehicles, a Hyundai Grand i10, had been travelling from Nongoma to Durban, while the other vehicle, a Ford Ranger, was travelling towards Gingindlovu.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the Ford Ranger lost control and collided head-on with the Hyundai Grand i10. We pause to pay our deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” said provincial MEC Siboniso Duma.

Duma has further mandated the Road Traffic Inspectorate to strengthen road safety measures ahead of schools’ reopening in the province this week.
